LateNightTales
ALNLP08
Nightmares On Wax's groundbreaking "Late Night Tales" compilation. Tom Scott's "Sneakin' In The Back" - one of the most sampled beats in hip-hop - appears in all its glory, while Quincy Jones adds his classic "Listen (What It is)", the inspiration for NOW's "Nights Interlude". George Evelyn's hip-hop sensibility is at the forefront throughout, and nowhere is it more evident than on "Intergalactic Throwdown" by former freestyler-turned-DJ Mad Doctor X. And can we forget Dusty Springfield's great version of Classic IV's "Spooky"? No we can not. And at the end there is the traditional cover version, where George serves up a luscious version of "Brothers On The Slide" that pays respect to the original Brit-funk-soul brothers Cymande. This is not a nightmare: it's Nightmares On Wax.
"The Late Night Tales compilation is something of a 'stealth' project for me personally. I'm very proud of it, but I probably didn't appreciate it as much back then as I do now because there was a lot going on at the time. You do these things between tours and you don't really have time to think about it because you're immediately busy doing the next thing.
