Is it just us, or do the Arctic Monkeys sound suspiciously like a modern version of George Formby...? Fit to burst with glottal stops and South Yorkshire idiolect, the Monkey boys have seemingly hit it big without subjecting themselves to the standard industry-schematic; a situation which has engendered them to the nation's youth and prompted a lexical-masturbation session on the part of the broadsheets to rival a new bout of Tory sleaze. Taut, frenetic and with a keen sense of wit, songs like 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' and 'Mardy Bum' have genuine wit, detailing the minutia of Blair's Britain in a style which is one part Morrissey, two parts Mike Skinner. Harking from the hilly extremes of Sheffield, the Monkey's continue a legacy established by ABC, Human League, Pulp et al., with caustic wit and innovative noise coming together in a chart-pleasing package. The undoubted highlight of the LP is 'Fake Tales of San Francisco', a song which slaughters the likes of McFly whilst having the kind of stadium-felling soul which the Gallagher's would sell their accents for... You're not from San Francisco, you're from Hunters Bar!
