This band (led by drummer Malcolm Catto) are probably best known for having backed-up DJ Shadow on 'This Time I'm Gonna Do It My Way' from his album, The Outsider, but after four years in the making The Heliocentrics' debut full-length is finally available. The music here borrows from '70s soundtrack tendencies, the cinemascope funk of David Axelrod and the jazz abstraction of Sun Ra - often within the same track. 'The Zero Hour' seems to have all these elements happening in simultaneity, and there's plenty of adventurous sound to be found elsewhere too: 'The American Empire' opens with elecroacoustic gymnastics that would make Bernard Parmegiani proud. Next up comes the aggressive drum barrage of 'Before I Die', which is destined to be sampled a thousand times over. In fact, Catto's drumming has already been given the MPC treatment by Madlib himself, making appearances on both Shades Of Blue and an assortment of Yesterday's New Quintet releases, but Out There is sure to establish Catto and his fellow players as a Stones Throw force in their own right.
