I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free
SONG 28
Bryn Jones’ jungle and acid noise salvo ‘Rhiza Coil of Resin’ unleashed on vinyl for first time after 25 years secreted inside the much coveted ‘Box of Silk and Dogs’ set.
First issued in 1999, the same year he passed, this material has achieved legendary status among Muslimgauze fiends for its mix of ruffneck late ‘90s jungle ballistics and speaker-eating acid noise. It is now given new wings by I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free, a Ukrainian label who share the artist’s emancipatory politics, to run amok on ‘floors somewhere between your DJ Scud & I-Sound cuts or ruggedest dubs by NPLGNN and The Bug.
The pugilistic tussle of sandpapered Arabic drums and double-dipping bass in ‘Deceive Yourself’ sets dancers on their toes for a deadly session taking in the more sinuous, angular stepper ‘Arab Quarter’, punctuated with mournful female voice and plucky strings, and its slightly longer edit slathered with psychoactive, wraithlike distortion, thru to the Arabesque weave of flute and acid noise ‘Why Iraq’, and a more typical widescreen piece of depth charged subs and ricocheting, hand-played percussion textured with non-musical voices in his signature style on ‘Effendi.’
