Originally released in 1973 on CBS Germany and given a magnificent, fresh reissue by the curators at Bureau B, "Roboterwerke" is the legendary debut album by West German electronic eccentrics Supersempfft. Crafted by a trio of childhood friends—Franz Aumüller, Franz Knüttel, and Dieter Kolb—this sci-fi concept album tells the high-concept, cartoonish story of a tuba-playing frog who is technologically upgraded into a star-surfing superhero.Musically, the record is powered by a fourth member: "Roboterwerke," a custom, revolutionary drum machine built by Knüttel himself (a machine so ahead of its time that a replica was sold to and used by Tangerine Dream). The result is a delirious joyride that operates at the exact nexus of driving Krautrock, cosmic disco, leftfield reggae, and vocoder-heavy synth-pop. From the hydraulic robo-funk of "Let's Beam Him Up" to the wide-screen pop bliss of "I'm Gonna Make You Big," this record sounds incredibly fresh and decades ahead of its time.
