Twisted Teens’ self-titled debut feels like an adrenaline rush pulled straight from the underground — raw, restless and charged with a strange, almost mystical energy. Emerging from New Orleans, the band take the primitive force of garage punk and let it spill into country, folk, rock’n’roll and hazy, dreamlike passages, twisting between genres without ever sounding calculated.

There’s an earthy, erotic quality to the record, as if the whole thing has been unearthed rather than recorded. Guitars scrape and howl, pedal steel cuts through the distortion, rhythms stumble forward and melodies suddenly bloom out of the noise. The songs carry traces of the Stooges’ primal attack, the odd detour into country, and a fascination with the esoteric that gives the whole album a slightly hallucinatory character.

What makes Twisted Teens so compelling is the feeling that anything could happen next. It’s punk at heart, but not particularly interested in punk orthodoxy — more concerned with instinct, movement and transformation. Like breaking through cold soil into sudden spring warmth, the record is physical, messy and alive.
