The third and final album from Hot Snakes, originally released in 2004. Led by John Reis (Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu), Audit In Progress pushes the band’s downstroked rhythms and subsonic pulses further than ever, adding even more fire and intensity to their already explosive sound.
The band recorded the album with new drummer Mario Rubalcaba at San Diego’s Big Fish Recording, working with engineer Ben Moore. An increased attraction to dissonance emerged on Audit In Progress, resulting in a record that feels sharper, darker and more volatile than its predecessors.
The album was warmly received by both critics and fans and was named “Best Punk Album” at the 2005 San Diego Music Awards. More shows followed, taking the band to cities across the world, before Hot Snakes entered what could only be described as a mid-life punk crisis and stopped performing together in 2005.
But that wasn’t the end of the story. Hot Snakes reunited in 2011, returning to the stage for a series of shows and tours. After another period away, the band returned in 2018 with Jericho Sirens, their first studio album in 14 years, released by Sub Pop.
Hot Snakes continued performing and working on new material in the years that followed. In 2023, frontman and guitarist Rick Froberg revealed that a new album was nearly complete, but he sadly passed away in June of that year, bringing the band’s story to an end.
Audit In Progress therefore stands not only as a defining record of Hot Snakes’ first era, but as a snapshot of a band at the height of its powers — raw, restless, dissonant and completely uncompromising.
