Originally released in 2001, Khanate is the self-titled debut from one of the most uncompromising groups in extreme music. Built around Stephen O’Malley (Sunn O))), KTL), James Plotkin (OLD, Scorn), Alan Dubin (OLD, Gnaw) and Tim Wyskida (Blind Idiot God), the album pushes doom, drone and extreme metal into an almost unbearably slow and oppressive territory.

Across five long-form pieces, Khanate strip the music down to its most unsettling elements: massive low-end guitar drones, sparse and punishing drums, tortured vocals and an overwhelming sense of tension. There is very little conventional release here — instead, the band builds a suffocating atmosphere where every note seems to hang in the air for an eternity.

The self-titled album established the band’s signature approach from the very beginning: brutally slow, dissonant and deeply claustrophobic, but also remarkably precise. Rather than offering the catharsis traditionally associated with doom metal, Khanate create something far more disturbing — music that feels like the disaster has already happened and is simply continuing to unfold.
