Psychobabble 12
Released in 2021, Acheron is the second chapter in King Buffalo’s ambitious 2021 trilogy and one of the Rochester trio’s most immersive and atmospheric records. Recorded and filmed live inside Howe Caverns, the album takes the band’s heavy psychedelic sound into darker, more spacious and otherworldly territory.
Across just four tracks, each stretching close to ten minutes, King Buffalo build slowly and patiently, layering hypnotic guitar lines, deep bass grooves, synth textures and pounding drums. The result sits somewhere between psychedelic rock, stoner rock, space rock and progressive rock, but the band’s own description of their sound — “Heavy Psych” — feels particularly appropriate.
The cavernous recording environment gives Acheron an almost supernatural atmosphere. The title track moves from meditative passages into crushing riffs, while “Zephyr” drifts through shimmering, Krautrock-inspired rhythms. “Shadows” is darker and more spacious, and closer “Cerberus” brings the album to a heavy, dissonant and hypnotic conclusion.
Acheron is less about immediate impact than surrendering to the journey. The long-form compositions allow the music to breathe, expand and transform gradually, creating a cinematic listening experience that feels vast, mysterious and deeply psychedelic.
A hypnotic Heavy Psych masterpiece — slow-burning, spacious and beautifully heavy.
