Originally released in 2016, Orion is the debut full-length from Rochester, New York’s King Buffalo and a remarkable introduction to the band’s signature blend of heavy psych, stoner rock, space rock and blues. Written and recorded by the trio at the Main Street Armory in Rochester, the album captures a band already fully immersed in its own hypnotic universe.

Across nine tracks and nearly 48 minutes, King Buffalo build their sound around deep grooves, heavy guitar tones, spacious atmospheres and slow-burning psychedelic momentum. Songs such as “Orion,” “Sleeps on a Vine,” “Kerosene” and the nearly ten-minute “Drinking From the River Rising” unfold patiently, allowing riffs and melodies to develop naturally rather than rushing toward an obvious climax.

There is a remarkable sense of flow throughout Orion. The music can feel heavy without becoming oppressive, psychedelic without losing its groove, and expansive without drifting away. King Buffalo’s own description of the band as “Heavy Psych” fits perfectly, while the album’s combination of blues, stoner and space-rock elements gives it a distinct identity.

Orion is a beautifully balanced debut: immersive, warm and hypnotic, with enough weight to satisfy the heaviest of listeners and enough melody to keep drawing you back.
