Released in 1966, Pet Sounds is The Beach Boys’ landmark album and one of the defining records of the studio era. Brian Wilson pushed the group’s sound far beyond the conventions of surf pop, combining intricate vocal harmonies with unusual instrumentation, tape effects and sophisticated arrangements.

The original mono mix is particularly important: this was the mix Wilson personally supervised and the version intended for the vast majority of listeners at the time. Tracks such as “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows” and “Caroline, No” reveal an album that is as meticulously constructed as it is emotionally direct.

A key record in the development of modern pop production, Pet Sounds remains both a remarkable historical document and an endlessly rewarding listen on vinyl.
