William Onyeabor was one of the most mysterious and original figures in Nigerian music. A businessman, self-taught musician and independent producer, he recorded a series of highly inventive albums in the 1970s and 1980s, mixing African rhythms with electronic instruments, funk, disco and early synth music.

Who Is William Onyeabor? brings together some of his best-known tracks, including When the Going Is Smooth & Good, Fantastic Man and Atomic Bomb. The music is simple but incredibly effective, built around drum machines, synthesizers, repetitive grooves and Onyeabor's distinctive voice. His recordings have a strange futuristic quality, sounding both deeply connected to African music and completely outside of its time.

The compilation introduced Onyeabor's music to a much wider international audience and helped establish him as a cult figure among DJs, collectors and fans of electronic and African music.
