Released in 2021, City Slicker is Cameron Lew’s playful take on the idea of a lost movie soundtrack. Imagining an American remake of a fictional Japanese film from 1981, the EP follows Ginger Root into a world of neon streets, romantic misadventures and late-night city life.
Musically, Lew blends city pop, yacht rock, funk, soul and bedroom pop into his signature “Aggressive Elevator Soul”. The production is warm and carefully layered, balancing silky grooves, understated melodies and a touch of psychedelic oddness. Tracks like “Loretta” and “Juban District” capture the nostalgic atmosphere without feeling like simple retro pastiche.
At just six tracks and around 19 minutes, City Slicker feels concise and cinematic, almost like a collection of scenes from a film that exists only in your imagination. Written, performed and produced by Lew, it remains one of Ginger Root’s most charming and distinctive releases.
