4AD 0069 LP
A document of a band that disappeared almost as quickly as it emerged, Fond Reflections captures the abrasive and unpredictable side of late-’70s British post-punk. Released by 4AD in 2019, the compilation brings together rehearsal recordings, demos and alternate versions of tracks associated with the Wheel in the Roses EP (1980), alongside lesser-known material.
Their sound is tense and unstable: dissonant guitars, insistent rhythms, near-declamatory vocals and an approach that pushes post-punk towards noise and industrial experimentation. “Rema-Rema”, “International Scale” and “Murdermuzic” carry a raw energy without feeling like mere sketches of more polished songs. The rough edges of the recordings are part of their character, preserving something of the intensity of rehearsals and the dynamics of a band still finding its direction.
Although Rema-Rema came to an end in 1980, its members went on to work in projects such as The Wolfgang Press and Renegade Soundwave. Fond Reflections revisits a brief but significant chapter in the history of 4AD and British post-punk: restless, experimental music that remains surprisingly alive.
