Released in 2011, In The Mountain In The Cloud marks Portugal. The Man’s major-label debut and a defining moment in the band’s evolution. Psychedelic textures, indie-rock energy and classic rock influences meet in a richly layered sound, balancing catchy hooks with a more experimental edge. From the sun-soaked melodies of “So American” to the expansive, hypnotic closer “Sleep Forever,” this is an album that rewards repeated listens.

Built around intricate arrangements, shifting rhythms and John Gourley’s distinctive vocals, the record moves effortlessly between dreamy psychedelia, soulful grooves and expansive alternative rock. Tracks like “Got It All (This Can’t Be Living Now)” showcase the band’s knack for turning unconventional ideas into memorable songs, while the album’s fluid, almost cinematic progression gives it a cohesive feel beyond its individual highlights. In The Mountain In The Cloud captures a band refining its experimental roots without losing sight of the art of a great hook — a compelling addition to any indie-rock collection, especially on vinyl.
