The “Low Estate” LP by 16 Horsepower appears on Music On Vinyl as a vinyl reissue of the band’s second studio album, originally released in 1997. The edition comes on 180-gram audiophile vinyl and includes an insert.
On “Low Estate,” 16 Horsepower blend folk, alternative country and a distinctly dark, neo-Gothic atmosphere. Producer John Parish, who also contributed guitar, organ, percussion and xylophone, shaped a distinctive sound together with David Eugene Edwards, Pascal Humbert, Jean-Yves Tola and Jeffrey-Paul Norlander—one that moves between rough-hewn Americana, religious imagery and angular intensity. Edwards plays banjo, concertina, guitar and hurdy-gurdy and defines the album with his compelling vocals.
The opener “Brimstone Rock” immediately sets the tone with its driving energy for an album that shifts between mournful ballads and agitated folk-rock passages. “Low Estate” intensifies the melancholic mood, while “Coal Black Horses” particularly highlights the band’s darker side. With “Fire Spirit,” a take on the song by The Gun Club, and “The Partisan,” 16 Horsepower expands its own material with two distinctive songs by other writers. The Music On Vinyl LP includes 15 tracks in total, bringing the complete album version back to vinyl.
