For some reason or other I always forget what Future Islands' singer, Samuel T Herring sounds like as I limber up to listen through their records. Consequently, every time I hear his idiosyncratic croak I find myself having a "Oh, THAT guy" moment. There's no way around the strangeness of this vocalist's delivery. You could say he channels Tenacious D-mode Jack Black, Stewie from Family Guy or Dick Valentine from Electric Six, but no comparison does justice to the peculiarities of Herring's presence. He seems to adopt a gruff, aggrandising, faux-English persona which sounds totally at odds with the rather cutting-edge electronic-rock sound the band so effortlessly harness (they're contemporaries with fellow Baltimore resident Dan Deacon, as it happens), but somehow it all fits together into an utterly unique but ultimately compelling configuration of sounds on great tracks like 'Tin Man' and 'An Apology'.
