O călătorie muzicală captivantă, Illinois te poartă prin orașe fantomă, mori de cereale, săli de spital și „City of Broad Shoulders”, cu apariții surpriză ale unui poet, unui președinte, unui criminal în serie, OZN-uri, Superman, țapul care a blestemat Cubs și celebra „Chickenmobile” din Decatur.

Sufjan împletește stiluri muzicale variate – jazz, funk, pop, folk și accente rodgers & hammerstein – și texturile a 25 de instrumente într-o tapiserie de persoane și locuri faimoase, infame, iconice și anonime. Invocând muza poetului Carl Sandburg, Illinois aduce fanfare de trompete, cvartete de coarde, coruri feminine și pasaje ambientale de pian, toate aranjate în jurul falsetului emergent al lui Stevens.
