La sfârșitul anilor ’60 și începutul anilor ’70, trupa Meters din New Orleans a creat instrumentale funk irezistibile, reduse la esență și menite să facă oamenii să se ridice și să danseze. Când casa de discuri Josie a dat faliment în 1971, trupa a trecut la Reprise Records, extinzându-și orizonturile sonore și punând mai mult accent pe voce.

Albumul Cabbage Alley, debutul lor la Reprise, îi arată experimentând cu sunete tropicale („Soul Island”), solo-uri de chitară în stil Allman Brothers („Stay Away”), cover-uri după Neil Young („Birds”) și versuri cu mesaj social („Lonesome and Unwanted People”). Totuși, adevăratele hituri rămân imnurile funk simple, cum sunt „You’ve Got to Change”, „Do the Dirt” și „Chug Chug Chug-a-Lug” (single inclus aici ca bonus).

Acest album și succesorul său, Rejuvenation din 1974, oferă multe momente de vârf Meters, deși niciunul nu atinge constant strălucirea înregistrărilor lor pentru Josie, găsite pe albumele The Meters, Struttin’ și Look-Ka Py Py..
