Orchis a side project of Chloroplast (www.chloroplast.ro), a long-term project dedicated to collecting electrical biodata signals from a vast range of plant species across Romania and some parts of Europe. Using several types of custom galvanic sensors, we recorded and documented hundreds of plants, mosses, lichens, and mushrooms in diverse ecological settings, resulting in the largest collection of its kind.

During our research, we uncovered television archive footage from Bucharest documenting experiments on plant conductivity, communication, and responses to external stimuli dating back to 1984 at the Biology Institute of Bucharest. However, similar techniques had already been explored across the world as early as the 1960s and even earlier.

One such piece, Pipi Poka - Insect Close (2022), is a poem generated by a Lucobryum glaucum moss, using technology and chance operations. The plant’s faint electrical impulses were monitored and mapped onto a sequence of 124 values, each corresponding to a word from the Toki Pona vocabulary. Toki Pona, a minimalist philosophical language created by Canadian linguist Sonja Lang, consists of only 14 phonemes and was designed as a means to simplify thought and communication, particularly during periods of depression. Its emphasis on the core nature and effect of ideas makes it an ideal bridge between abstract biodata and human language.

For Orchis, we collaborated with leading orchid specialist Nora De Angelli— a molecular biologist and author of a meticulously researched book on Romanian orchids, a lifetime endeavor undertaken alongside her father. The biodata collected from these plants was later analysed, sonified and transformed into several representative musical motifs that each served as the foundation for a track/species.

The Orchis LP is a gatefold, 180 gram, semi-translucent green vinyl with a variable base hue and custom splatter, making each piece unique. Limited edition of less than 190.
