With Hopes and Fears, Keane arrived at the forefront of British alternative rock in 2004. Their debut studio album topped the UK Albums Chart, became the second best-selling British album of the year, and has since achieved 9× Platinum certification. Following Keane’s win for Best Album at the 2005 BRIT Awards, the record returned to No. 1.
What made Keane stand out was their distinctive approach to rock: instead of building their songs around electric guitars, they placed Tim Rice-Oxley’s piano and synthesizers at the heart of the arrangements. Combined with Tom Chaplin’s expressive vocals and the understated rhythm section, this gave Hopes and Fears its melodic, atmospheric character. Featuring enduring songs such as “Somewhere Only We Know” and “Everybody’s Changing”, it remains the band’s defining album and a landmark of 2000s British pop-rock.
